Young Justice: The Kids Are Alright

August 30th, 2010

Young Justice Print 2009

This is a Young Justice print I’ve created and have available at comic conventions.

At the New York Comic Con in 2009, I was getting a lot of commission requests for Impulse and Superboy with news that Bart and Kon were coming back into the DCU.

I figured it would be fun to draw the whole YJ gang since I hadn’t  done so since the series ended in 2003.
I love all these characters and drawing the YJ series is definitely a highlight of my career. And YJ fans have been loyal and consistently appreciative even with the book being gone for over 7 years. Thanks to all of you!

Now we have the Young Justice cartoon on the way and more Young Justice trade paperbacks coming form DC soon. This is a  great time to be a YJ fan!

The black and white line art of this piece is featured in my 2010 Todd Nauck sketchbook Vol.1 on sale now. Just click the BUY NOW button at the top of the right side of this page!

ROM: Space Knight

June 23rd, 2010

ROMromfrontROM: Space Knight… I first encountered this character when it was introduced as a toy. A 12″ action figure that I felt provided less action than I desired in a toy. Sure, he had light-up and noise making features and gadgets you could place in his hands. But his legs couldn’t move. How could I put him in what looked like the splits but was actually a “run super fast” position? For a toy this size, I was spoiled by my Bulletman action figure with multiple points of articulation.

A few years later, I discovered Marvel had put out a comic series about ROM. I only had a couple of issues that I had gotten when I purchased my friend’s collection (an event that more than doubled my collection that I call the Great 10th Grade Comic Acquisition). I read and re-read those few issues multiple times.

rom-annual_superI don’t recall who drew the issues I had. But I did have ROM annual #3, one of the last ROM comics. It guest starred The New Mutants which was becoming one of my favorite comic series. And I loved this Bill Sienkiewicz cover.

Just recently, while perusing my Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, I came across the ROM entry. I remembered reading the comic and being inspired by the art and concept. So I decided to try my hand at drawing ROM. He has a pretty simplistic design. The fun really comes in playing with the metallic textures.

I don’t know who owns the license, but it would be kinda cool to see ROM re-enter the Marvel Universe… Assuming there was a big enough demand for that sort of thing.

This piece was draw with black, red, and silver Sharpie on cardboard.

Teen Titans Go: Cassie Sandsmark Wonder Girl

April 24th, 2010

TTG54.Cassie.inksThis the original character design I did of Cassie Sandsmark the second Wonder Girl for Teen Titans Go #54.

We went for a younger, spunkier type of Wonder Girl for TTG.

I was unfortunately not able to draw the issue she appeared in (though we were able to work her into our last issue, #55, so i could get a chance to draw her in action).

Wish we got to do more with her!

Rogue: Cause I’m Still Preoccupied With 1985.

April 11th, 2010

Rogue1985I was flipping through my old Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe comics looking for reference the other day. I came across the Rogue entry. She was wearing this costume. It reminded me of how much I enjoyed the simpler look she had when I started reading X-Men as a kid.

I keep getting nostalgic for the 1980’s. I really liked her all-black body suit with some 80’s fashions thrown on top. Like X-Men meets Flashdance/Valley Girl.

When I first encountered Rogue in Secret Wars, I thought she was a pretty uninteresting character. The I started reading X-Men and she started to round out. When she absorbed Colossus and Nightcrawler’s powers and took on their features as well, she looked so cool. And by the time she was in the Australian Outback team of X-Men, I was a full fledged fan. (And Marc Silvestri’s art didn’t hurt either!)

This piece drawn with pencil, Pigma/Micron and Copic Markers on Bristol board.

Cloak and Dagger

December 12th, 2009
Cloak.Dagger.09-12.tn

Cloak and Dagger by Todd Nauck

When I started collecting comics in 8th grade, Marvel had recently introduced 2 new, unique heroes, Cloak and Dagger. I first encountered these characters in their first mini-series. Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson were teen runaways that met on the streets on NYC. They became friends. They were abducted by drug dealers experimenting a new drug on runaways. Though previous kids died from the drug, Tandy and Ty had latent mutant abilities awakened by the drug.

Ty developed a connection to a dark dimension, contained by his cloak, he could teleport himself and others through. But it gave him a hunger that could only be sated by light that would be stolen from those that entered his cloak.

Tandy gained the ability to project light and throw psionic “light daggers” guided by her will. These daggers can steal vitality of an opponent or have curative effects. As an endless source of light, Tandy could project enough light to stave of Ty’s hunger.

Ty and Tandy began a war against the drug crime trade and an aid to young runaways as Cloak and Dagger.

One of the great things about this mini-series (and beginning of their first regular series) is that this is where I became a fan of artist, Rick Leonardi’s work. Rick has a great sense of form and movement to his figures. His storytelling is strong and exciting. His detail and line work give plenty for the eye to play with. I consider Rick Leonardi one of my biggest influences in my comic book art career.

I recently decided I would try my hand at drawing these 2 classic characters. It’s fun to draw characters I’ve enjoyed reading since I was a kid. As I draw them, it takes back to those memories of first discovering them. I remember getting a big box of Marvel comics each Christmas of my teenage years. My mom would order the pack of 30 Marvel comics from the JCPenny Christmas catalog. I’d spend the next few days devouring those stories. I think that’s how I came across my first issue of Cloak and Dagger.

I love coming across a Cloak and Dagger comic from a bargain bin to help complete my run. It’s a fun treasure hunt to my past.

This piece was drawn with Sharpie markers, Pigma markers, and White-Out on cardboard. View this piece at my Facebook FanPage and DeviantArt page.
